First time buyers Billy and Lucy Czunys have joined the property ladder at Linden Homes’ energy efficient Home @ Heartlands development in Redruth, thanks to the Government’s Help to Buy scheme.
Billy, from Flushing, is an account manager for a stock brokers and his wife Lucy, 25, is a BT customer services advisor. They were living in a rented one bedroom cottage in Penryn and were desperate to have a home of their own with their dog Memphis.
They bought a three bedroom terraced house at Home @ Heartlands using Help to Buy, which is available to existing homeowners and first time buyers. It enables you to move with just a five per cent deposit, owning 100 per cent of the home but taking out just 75 per cent mortgage, with the remaining 20 per cent borrowed as a Government backed loan.
Speaking about their move Billy, 28, said: “It’s been such a fantastic experience for us - we bought our home off-plan, which enabled us to secure the plot we wanted early on and choose our kitchen. A brand new home appealed to us as we didn’t want to have to spend time and money doing a property up, or have any nasty surprises that you can get with a second hand home like the need for a new roof.
“We also loved the eco ethos behind Home @ Heartlands and that we’ll save money on energy bills. We’ve got triple glazed windows and photovoltaic panels so it’s going to make a big difference to us.
“We were looking to get on the property ladder for ages and were interested in the Help to Buy scheme but didn’t know much about it.
“Carole Mitchell was so helpful and really held our hand throughout the whole process. We needed a 5% deposit, which was manageable and our monthly mortgage payments are affordable, which was very important to us as we didn’t want to stretch ourselves too far.
“It’s about £100 a month cheaper for us to buy our house than to rent another three bedroom house in Redruth, which just amazes me. We’re saving money, reducing our energy bills and investing in our future by getting on the housing ladder - it’s been one of the best moves we’ve ever made.”
Carole Mitchell, sales executive for Linden Homes said: “We’re so happy that Billy and Lucy have bought their first home at Home @ Heartlands, it’s a great milestone to achieve and Help to Buy really helped them make that step.
“At Home @ Heartlands, the properties are being built to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4, which is much higher than average. This means the homes are more energy efficient and eco friendly which will have a positive impact on their energy bills and carbon footprint.”
The homes will be built with increased levels of insulation and triple glazed windows to ensure heat loss is kept to a minimum. Each home will also be fitted with a high efficiency boiler with pre-heater water supply, photovoltaic panels, plus smart metering and energy display devices so you can keep track of how much energy you’re using. Energy efficient lighting and glazing will improve natural day-light and there is also a natural rainwater collection for garden use.
Designed to reflect the local Cornish heritage and architecture in the county’s historic mining centre, the development will feature a range of one and two bedroom apartments, plus two three and four bedroom homes for sale with Help to Buy.
To clarify the Help to Buy process Linden Homes has created a new step-by-step animation which gives a simple overview of the scheme.
