Getting in, around and out of Tyne and Wear

By car, the A1(M) south provides access to the M1 to London. Edinburgh can be reached via the A1 northbound while the A69 heading west provides access to Carlisle.

When travelling around the inner cities, many commuters prefer to take the Metro to avoid congestion at peak times. With 60 stations in operation across the county, the Metro is a highly convenient and accessible method of getting around.

You will find railway stations in most towns across Tyne and Wear, with direct rail services to London King’s Cross available from Sunderland, Newcastle and the Metrocentre in Gateshead. For other major cities, head to Newcastle train station for direct services to Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham.

Newcastle International Airport, situated on the county’s border provides connections to destinations across the UK, Europe and the rest of the world, and is accessible via the Metro as well as by car.
