Why make Essex your home?

Anyone buying a new home in Essex will soon discover there is much more to this county than meets the eye. Epping Forest, for example, boasts the largest public open space in the London area, at almost 6,000 acres. It stretches 12 miles from Manor Park in East London to just north of Epping. The county is incredibly diverse with some of the quaintest and most picturesque towns and villages in the UK, and over 350 miles of coastline, much of which forms protected Nature Reserves. Essex is also home to Britain’s oldest recorded town, Colchester, a popular tourist destination thanks to its historic castle, the largest Norman keep in Europe. Let’s not forget Colchester Zoo, one of Europe’s finest Zoos with over 240 rare and endangered species set in 60 acres of parkland and lakes.

Families flock to Essex not just for its wide open spaces, fun days out, and close proximity to London, but also for its excellent schooling. There are hundreds of junior and primary schools across Essex, 90 state secondary schools, a handful of grammar and private schools, and also The University of Essex. Essex is also home to intu Lakeside shopping centre, a large out-of-town shopping centre located in West Thurrock that includes hundreds of shops, restaurants and a Vue cinema. Essex is a diverse county just waiting to be explored. From picturesque coastlines and expansive woodland to luxury boutiques and Michelin star restaurants, Essex has it all.

Getting in and out, and around Essex

Due to its close proximity to London, Essex is a popular destination for commuters, and its excellent road and rail links make travelling around, and in and out of the county a breeze. Trains to London Liverpool Street run regularly from Colchester, Chelmsford, Brentwood and other Essex towns, taking no longer than an hour at the most. Heading North on the same line, Suffolk and Norfolk are within easy reach, with Norwich just under a two hour’s journey from Chelmsford. Essex also has excellent bus links. Whether travelling to and from work, to the beach at Southend, or for a day out at Colchester Zoo, the First Bus Essex service provides a cost-effective way of getting around the county.

By car, there is good access to Essex from all parts of the country via the A12, M25 and A14. Park and Ride services also operate in many of the larger towns throughout Essex.

By air, Stansted Airport serves destinations in Europe as well as Asia, and Heathrow and Gatwick are a little over an hour away from Essex's southwest border.
