The town itself boasts a welcoming, friendly community, which is evident in its long tradition of bustling markets dating back to 1310. With food stalls selling local produce, eateries serving mouth-watering food, and stands for handbags, hardware and everything in between, these weekly markets are a popular event.

One of the town’s most popular tourist attractions is the promenade at the bottom of Knaresborough where it adjoins the River Nidd. With views decorated with brightly painted rowing boats, this is a lovely place to visit and take a stroll.

The stunning natural phenomena of Mother Shipton’s Cave and the nearby petrifying well are a must-visit. With the water being rich in minerals, the objects hanging from the well appear to turn to stone over time. This was historically believed to have been caused by the witchcraft of Mother Shipton, a local soothsayer and prophetess who was born in Knaresborough in the 14th century.

The ruins of Knaresborough Castle are a famous local landmark offering spectacular views from its hilltop location. The parkland surrounding the castle offers the opportunity for scenic walks and plays host to the annual Festival of Visual Arts and Entertainment.
