Paignton Based Construction Project Opens Its Doors To The Workforce Of Tomorrow
03 Mar 2015

A house building project operated by Linden Homes, part of the Galliford Try Group will be opening its doors to young people living in the Paignton area as part of this year's Open Doors weekend run by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG). The site will be open to visitors on 6 - 7 March and will be one of many projects taking part in the national event.

The Open Doors weekend which offers free admission, will give young people the chance to explore the wide range of construction careers available. It will include glimpses of traditional roles like bricklaying and quantity surveying, and also lesser known roles like site health and safety management, environmental management and interior design. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the talented men and women behind some of the construction projects.

The event at White Rock, a new residential development will be one of many sites opening its doors alongside iconic projects including Crossrail in London; the Forth Bridge Replacement Crossing in Scotland and the Hitachi Rail Vehicle Manufacturing Facility in County Durham. It is hoped that the weekend’s events will get young people from different genders, backgrounds and abilities to start thinking about the rewarding and exciting careers they could pursue in the industry.

Stephen Ratcliffe, UKCG Director said:

“Perceptions of the construction industry are still very much stuck in the past. Many people, including parents, teachers and careers advisers, still see it as offering very limited career opportunities for young people in what is often seen as a physically demanding and male dominated industry. That’s why UKCG in conjunction with its partner organisations, is leading the way in ensuring that young people – and those that influence their careers decisions – are given the opportunity to see first-hand the rewarding and diverse range of roles on offer in the modern construction industry. It’s only by doing this that we will overcome skills shortages in the industry and build the workforce of tomorrow. ”

Tim Douglass, Production Director for Linden Homes, said:

“We are delighted to be opening up one of our sites for UKCG’s Open Doors Weekend, now in its third year. We hope our event will give local youngsters – as well as their parents and teachers – a unique glimpse of the expertise that goes towards the completion of each and every one of the projects we work on. What’s more, we hope that it will inspire young attendees to join the industry in the future.”
