Kayleigh Davies (23) from Yeovil, received £100 Amazon voucher after Linden Homes declared her project the most inspiring due to an amazing backstory.
With an open brief from the University, Kayleigh decided to focus her final project on the interior design of two homes from one villa complex, which she helped create floor plans for while on a self-funded trip to Bali last summer where she attended Tropical Architecture and Interior Design Summer School run by Study In Bali for five weeks.
With two of a possible six floor plans to choose from, Kayleigh decided to create interiors for a high-end luxury villa aimed at couples, and a multi-functional family home complete with cinema. Taking inspiration from Balinese and Western cultures, Kayleigh created one internal design that was inspired by the Peruvian Rainbow Mountains and the other by African Culture.
Kayleigh said: “I found the opportunity to gain some experience in Bali and after previously visiting the country, I jumped at the opportunity to go back and loved every minute. When it came to my final year project, because we had an open brief, I decided to pull on my experience with the Summer School in Bali as it just seemed like the obvious thing to do.”
Impressed with Kayleigh’s designs, Jo Dixon, marketing manager from Linden Homes decided to award her with the £100 Amazon voucher. Two other students were awarded £50 vouchers for their projects.
Linden Homes has been judging final year projects at Solent University for the past five years. Jo said: “We have a great relationship with Solent having worked with them for a number of years and are always delighted when we are asked to go back and judge the final year projects. The students put in so much effort and it’s always a hard decision but, Kayleigh’s work really stood out this year and it came with such an incredible story which to me, really showed how passionate she is about her career in interior design.”
Kayleigh added: “I was really overwhelmed and shocked that my work was chosen by Linden Homes. To have someone from the industry recognise your work is incredible as it has given me more confidence in my ability as an interior designer and I’m excited for the future.”
Kayleigh has now returned to Yeovil where she has already been freelancing, including working with an Instagram influencer. Next year she hopes to complete another internship in New Zealand.
