From building site to boxing ring – for one night only, site manager John Firth became Linden Homes West Yorkshire’s answer to Rocky Balboa!
But after a charity boxing match in front of a sell-out 2,000 strong-crowd in Leeds, John has hung up his gloves and is raring to take on a new challenge, all in a good cause.
John was one of over 80 boxing beginners to fight it out in the White Collar Boxing event in aid of Cancer Research UK at the weekend.
Based at the new Riverside Mills development in Boroughbridge, John had only been in training since January – with his ‘shadow boxing’ provoking on-site banter among his colleagues.
John explained: “I’ve never done anything like this before and I suppose you could say I’m going from couch potato to ‘Rocky’ in just eight weeks!
“I wanted to do something different and something to challenge myself, and this seemed the perfect thing to do, especially as it is for such a worthy cause. It was a fantastic event but I’ve decided to take early retirement from boxing!”
John has already more than trebled his original fund raising goal and has raised £1,700 to date; including a donation from Linden Homes. The group has raised over £37,000 so far.
Now John setting his sights a little higher when it comes to his next adventurous fundraising challenge – a charity skydive!
“I don’t know where or when yet, but that is the next new thing to try on my list. I did abseiling last year for charity so I need to think a little bigger … and higher!”
