There are several new housing developments in Colchester and many of the big UK developers are making their presence felt in the town: But one of the companies has caught the imagination of Colchester residents by creating something very different.
Harvey Panrucker and his partner Kevin have been living at Linden Homes’ Northfields development in Colchester for a year. In that time, visiting friends have been so impressed by the couple’s new environment that they too have investigated the possibility of moving to Northfields.
Harvey says that he and Kevin originally decided to move and put their old home on the market early in 2011. They got as far as finding a buyer, but after five months the sale fell through and they had to start again. It was at this time that they decided to go and have a look at Linden Homes’ Northfields development:
“We’d been looking around for a new home and we knew about Northfields – it’s well known in Colchester – so we decided to go and have a look. Our first surprise when we saw the town house was how big it was. It was so spacious – deceptively so. Our next surprise was that it had four bedrooms plus a study - we’d assumed we’d be looking for something with three bedrooms. Finally, we were very pleased and impressed with the build quality – which is excellent - and the unusual design.
“We had seen other developments, there are quite a few around locally, but those homes all seemed rather generic and the build quality on some of them wasn’t anywhere near as good as the Linden Homes. The design of our Northfields home is unusual – it’s square and cedar clad with white render. It’s a very modern design and really different to anything I’ve ever seen before.”
When Harvey and Kevin began to discuss the purchase of the house, again they were pleasantly surprised:
“We spoke to Doreen in the Northfields’ sales and marketing suite and she told us about the Linden Homes’ Part Exchange Scheme*. Obviously having already had a difficult time selling our old home, this appealed to us very much. We decided to go ahead and Doreen arranged for several valuations – we were pretty pleased with the offer Linden Homes made us for the old home. They became the guaranteed buyer so we knew the sale couldn’t fall through. We left all the dealings with the estate agents to them – and they paid the fees. It turned out to be a really straightforward move for us. Doreen was very helpful and made sure that we had very few problems.”
Since moving in, one of the things Harvey has noticed about their new home is how energy efficient it is:
“It’s so well insulated and so much cheaper to run than our old home. We had a three bedroom Victorian property and it was more expensive to heat than our new four bedroom one.”
Shortly after the couple moved into Northfields, they invited some friends over for dinner. One of them was Caroline Bradshaw, a local teacher. She liked the house so much that she decided to buy one herself.
“Caroline had been renting for six years but when she saw our town house, she was keen to know more about other properties at Northfields. She’s now bought a two bedroom house and is our neighbour!”
Harvey and Kevin are enjoying the friendly feel of Northfields too:
“It’s a great little community. There is a mixture of young professionals and young families – and it’s only a ten minute walk to the railway station, so it’s convenient as well.”
Northfields has a selection of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes, all within walking distance of Colchester railway station.
