To help support the learning of students at Plymouth University, Linden Homes South West has invited students to tour a live construction site and speak with site managers.
The first year undergraduate students are studying a range of relevant disciplines within the University’s Bachelor of Science programme, including Architectural Technology and the Environment, Environment Construction andSurveying, Construction Management and the Environment and Building Surveying and the Envrioment, all of which undertake the module “Domestic Construction Technology”. Having already covered the main principles of contemporary new home construction in the UK, the students were keen to examine first-hand the various stages of construction.
The first group of students, studying Architectural Technology and the Environment, this month toured Linden Homes’ Higher Moor development at Avonwick, in South Brent. Here, they observed construction practices and asked Site Manager Glyn Hilton about development costs, construction programmes, site organisation and management as well as health and safety. They also were given a first-hand look at the sustainable features being incorporated into the new homes, including solar panels and water recycling systems.
Many thanks to Linden Homes for the site visit to Avonwick. The students were really pleased to be able to see in practice the construction technologies, materials, processes, management, etc. that they have been studying in class. The visit certainly has contributed successfully towards their learning. Commented lecturer, Dr Pilkington.
These visits herald the beginning of a new partnership between Linden Homes and Plymouth University, who will showcase the 65 students as an example of best practice in learning and to encourage more females to consider careers in construction.
