A retired couple who instantly “fell in love” with their new house at Fernley Park, near Uckfield, showed such a flair for decorating they have put even the development’s show home in the shade!
Born-and-bred Londoners Chris and Pam Modoo have been married for 42 years, and the move from the capital to their new four-bedroom, three-storey townhouse nestling in the countryside was the chance to enjoy their dream of a rural life, not too far from town.
Former taxi driver Chris (61) and Pam (59), who worked as an HR manager, have worked together to put their personal stamp on their home – and enjoyed every minute of it.
Pam said: “We had been talking about moving for ages and decided that when we retired we wanted somewhere semi-rural. We’re Londoners born-and-bred but we wanted to experience living in the countryside – with a convenient town nearby.
“We both lived very busy lives. We still like London but we have friends in Uckfield, which made us think about it. We did not want to lose touch with our old life, but moving to outer London was expensive. Going this little bit further we can still see our friends, and the sale of our house bought us more.
“We were house-hunting for two whole days but Fernley Park was the first we saw. We turned up and instantly fell in love with it. It ticked everything on our list and set the benchmark very high.
“We feel like we’re on holiday at the moment, especially as the summer’s coming. We enjoy walking and like being nearer the sea.”
The couple made the most of buying a new home by being able to control details of the fixtures and fittings to meet their exacting standards and personal taste.
Pam explained: “We wanted it to look different to our old house, which was a three-bedroom semi, but keep some of its character. We thought the Linden Homes specifications were a good standard anyway, but we were able to influence every last detail of the house.
“We have changed colours of the rooms and had the garden landscaped, and put in blinds and mirrors – we’ve really enjoyed doing it.
“We have tried to be modern but with a traditional twist. The sitting room is traditional, the kitchen more modern, with glass and plastic table and chairs, and we had a fireplace fitted.”
Family and friends have been impressed by the couple’s efforts, and Pam added: “They’re absolutely delighted for us. They think the place and the house are wonderful, and what we’ve done to it. They’re blown away!”
