Solent University Students Boost Their Creative Flair With Linden Homes Project
14 Apr 2021

For the seventh year running, Solent University in Southampton has teamed up with Linden Homes (part of Vistry Group) to give a group of first year BA (Hons) Interior Design and Decoration students invaluable insight into their possible future careers with the beginnings of a creative project.

In previous years students have visited Boorley Park, Linden Homes’ flagship development in Botley to view the show homes and have a talk with the team about the interior design process. Due to pandemic restrictions the students weren’t able to visit this year so instead kicked off their project via video call with the Linden Homes team. The team explained the process of fitting out a show home from the initial concept through to the designer’s pitch and final finish and how the interior designers work with Linden Homes to create an appealing interior to attract purchasers.

The project tasks the students with designing the ground floor living space of the three-bedroom Fincham family home, requiring them to come up with ideas for the decoration, furniture, and layout of the space, including the kitchen, dining area, living room and downstairs cloakroom.

Olga Harnett-Makem, Senior Lecturer in Design Decoration is leading the students project and said: “Our students are really excited to have the opportunity to test their creativity on the design of a real show home for Linden Homes, it provides an invaluable work simulated experience.

“Their design brief requires they explore surface pattern ideas inspired by fashion designers when developing spatial layouts for the unique design and specification of the interior spaces. The students have twelve weeks to present their ideas for their original interior designs to inspire a modern family buying a Linden Homes house.”

Once the students have completed their creative projects Linden Homes will also play a role in judging their work within a pitch style environment. It provides the students with a taste of the pitch process and a chance to talk through their creative concepts as if pitching to a real-life client.

Amber Bowley, Sales Manager at Linden Homes said: “It’s always an absolute pleasure to work with the ever-passionate students from Solent University. Their designs, ideas and energy is always so impressive. We wish the group the best of luck in their projects and we can’t wait to have a look at their creations later in the year!”

Boorley Park is a thriving new community of new homes in Botley near Southampton which includes a brand-new primary school and once complete will provide a range of shops and a community centre.
