The next phase of work to breathe new life into a historic tin mining community in Cornwall, delivering new homes, retail and office space, will start this autumn after proposals were approved by planners.
A sustainable and eco-friendly residential community at Trevenson Park in Pool, has won planning approval from Cornwall Council, as part of a multi-million pound scheme which is being delivered under the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA’s) ‘Public Land Initiative’. This will help bring prosperity back to the west Cornwall towns of Camborne, Pool and Redruth.
Home builder Linden Homes is due to begin work in the autumn to provide 138 new homes, along with retail and office space, with the aim of providing new affordable homes as well as new and better-paid employment. The new development has been designed by South West architects and masterplanners LHC and will be delivered by Linden Homes in partnership with the HCA.
HCA Area Manager Versha Koria said: “This is a vitally important project because it supports wider plans to establish Camborne, Pool and Redruth as a thriving area of innovation, quality and prosperity and will provide a significant boost to the local economy.
“This is one of a number of exciting schemes beginning to take shape in Cornwall, and will form a key part in helping to build a stronger and more prosperous community here.”
The scheme will be built to achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, an above average standard which will include increased levels of insulation, improved airtightness, triple glazed windows and photovoltaic panels on roofs. All of these enhanced components will ultimately reduce energy use and bills for future occupiers.
A key feature of the development will be a grand gateway, linking Trevenson Road with the £27million Heartlands Park visitor centre, which has the restored Robinson’s Shaft as its focal point. At the opposite end, to the north, is visitor car-parking, Cornwall College and Pool Innovation Centre - a new business “acceleration” facility for start-ups as well as existing businesses.
Linden Homes’ Senior Development Manager, Mathew Stead said: “We are pleased to have achieved consent for the Trevenson Park South scheme and this will provide additional affordable homes and decent living spaces for the community. We have worked hard with our partners to achieve a new community for residents with unique recreational and amenity facilities on their doorstep. This will build on the success of our Boslowen development in Camborne”.
This first phase of the Trevenson Park South scheme is valued at more than £13million and benefits from an infrastructure contribution from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Convergence Programme.
The entrance of Heartlands Link, will be flanked by a distinctive 3 storey apartment and commercial buildings marking a stately gateway from Trevenson Road into the Heartlands Park and the World Heritage site.
The new properties along Trevenson Road reflect the existing semi-detached Victorian housing and older simple terraced cottages in both design and scale, whilst the properties facing onto the Heartlands development reflect the contemporary aspirations of the future Pool.
The buildings themselves, a quarter of which will be affordable homes, will reflect the site’s industrial heritage with specially adapted roof that will be orientated to optimise solar energy gain.
Building materials feature local stone and cladding in wood, with zinc and copper detail panels as a tribute to the heritage of the area.
Technical Director Bruce Jordan, for LHC said: “The living experience at Trevenson Park South will be truly unique. The location, layout and style of the buildings will have a special identity, creating a contemporary, sustainable and forward looking environment that makes a special reference to the history of the area.”
