New initiative at Tithe Barn is creating quite the buzz!

To celebrate World Bee Day on 20th May, a new homes development in Exeter is helping to create a safe haven for bees.

Linden Homes’ Tithe Barn development is introducing a series of bee bricks, which feature narrow openings to enable solitary bees to nest. This small change will increase opportunities for biodiversity and support the local bee community.

Bees, as well as other pollinators, are responsible for a third of the food we eat thanks to their important pollination work. In Britain there are over 270 different species of bee and nearly 250 are solitary.

Site manager, Marcus Ford, commented: “Bees play a vital role in producing the food that we eat, however their numbers are in decline. While you can plant bee friendly plants and flowers in your garden to help bees thrive, we wanted to go a step further to support the natural ecosystem here.

“We’re delighted to introduce bee bricks at Tithe Barn. The bricks are well-designed as they’re solid at the back so solitary bees cannot enter the cavity wall, they’ll simply nest within them and do not produce honey, live in hives or swarm.

“We’re installing one brick on a few selected properties so it’s a small change for us, but a giant one for the bee community.”

Located off Tithe Barn Way, Tithe Barn is a popular development on the outskirts of Exeter that benefits from a state-of-the-art district heating network. There are currently three and four bedroom homes available from £340,000 to £420,000.

World Bee Day shines a light on the habitat of pollinators to improve the conditions for their survival so that bees and other pollinators may thrive. It is celebrated on 20th May to commemorate the birthdate of Anton Janša, a pioneer of beekeeping, who was born in
