This summer the children of Waltham Chase Pre-School will be able to take full advantage of the sunshine and fresh air in their beautiful new school garden, which adjoins the local village hall. The garden was officially opened by Reverend Juliet Montague on Wednesday 29th April.
At the ceremony, Rev Montague was joined by staff and children from the Pre-school as well as representatives of all the local organisations and businesses who made a contribution to the creation of the garden.
The space, outside the Village Hall, has been transformed to create the new garden. A ditch had to be dug so drainage pipes could be fitted, a hedge was removed and replaced further back to enlarge the area and a picket fence was demolished to make way for a new fence.
With true community spirit, local companies and local people sponsored the individual fence panels; after the trenches were dug out the local Scout group laid the drainage pipes and moved a mountain of stones. To finish the garden off, Linden Homes Southern donated £2,870 to pay for the play grade artificial grass.
Another major contributor of this project is Trust 2000, a small grant-giving charity started by Reverend Morrell and a small group of local parishioners in 2000.
Sandra Glover from Waltham Chase Pre-School, who coordinated all the sponsorship and labour, thanked the helpers, parents, children and staff, as they gathered in their new garden:
“We are so grateful for the kind donations we’ve received and for all the hard work that’s been done to create this great space. The children will really enjoy playing out here in the fresh air – in a safe, fun garden that is theirs. I’d particularly like to thank Christina Cunningham, the committee treasurer and Kim Lazarou the committee secretary for managing the project and keeping it within budget and Waltham Chase Village Hall Committee for allowing the improvements to take place.
“We would also like to thank Trust 2000, R&G Gamblin, Equestrian Fencing, George Glover, Kevin Gale and our lead sponsor Linden Homes Southern for generously donating their time and money. I’d also like to thank our husbands and children for their support over the last year; without giving up their time at the weekend, this project would not have been possible.”
Brendon O’Neill, Linden Homes Southern’s managing director said it was a great project to have been involved with:
“It has been wonderful to watch this project evolve and witness how well the community of Waltham Chase has come together. It has been very inspiring and we are delighted to have been able to make a contribution to the garden. I am certain the children will have years of pleasure playing here.”
Linden Homes currently has homes available for sale at The Old Brewery in Horndean, St Michael’s Place in Waterlooville and will be launching a new development called Scholars Grange in Swanmore this summer.
