St Austell and Newquay MP, Steve Gilbert, visited Grampound last week to be shown demonstrations of portable wind turbines and solar panels made by pupils at the Village Primary.
Grampound and Creed Juniors were the first phase of a village Renewables Energy Legacy Project, supported by Linden Homes. The homebuilder has been supporting alternative energy, social enterprise, Camp Kernow’s Grassroots Programme for over a year throughout the county, to raise awareness about the fundamentals of alternative energy production and how to keep household bills down.
Everyone talks about renewable energy. But these children are really getting to grips with what that means at a personal level. They’re so enthusiastic about it that I’m sure they will continue to spread their knowledge through their families and the wider community, the Mr Gilbert enthused.
The MP joined the children at the end of their workshop, following a visit to Linden Homes’ development of The Tannery situated in the village. The site, is which is offering a range of affordable schemed housing, is being built to a high specification, that is sensitive to sustaining the local ecology as well as keeping residents bills down.
It’s great to see these new homes finally being built, after what I know was an extended and tortuous planning process. The affordable units look to be progressing well which will be a real help to local people, many of whom find themselves living in totally inadequate accommodation: on sofas, still with their parents, unable to start a family.
The simple fact is that we need many more new homes. I’m sure that companies like Linden Homes can deliver them – that’s obvious from the way they are building here in Grampound – but they need the confidence to invest. That’s why the Coalition has just introduced a new planning framework - to help get house building moving, creating jobs for local firms and delivering homes for local people.
Development of the 55 new and converted homes, one to five bedroom homes plus office space is currently underway, the last phase will involve the conversion of the listed Manor Tannery and the new homes to the rear of the Tannery will be set around a very attractive and large green area, purposefully kept to keep the view to the Tannery open.
The showhome is now open Thursday to Monday, between 10:00am until 5:00pm. Call 0844 417 4351 for more information.
