In Advance Of National Apprenticeship Week

Linden Homes, part of the Galliford Try Group, supported the national Open Doors event, where hundreds of construction sites across the UK invited the public to take a look at what takes place behind the scenes in our industry, ahead of National Apprenticeship Week (9th – 13th March).

On Friday 6th and Saturday 7th March, Linden Homes opened its doors at White Rock to members of the public, including schools and colleges, enabling visitors to meet the team, gain an insight into the project and learn more about work and careers in construction.

To launch the event, the Mayor of Torbay met the team on site, including Karen Blacklaw from CITB and three of Linden Homes’ apprentices at White Rock; they discussed issues including apprenticeships, skills and the use of local firms and labour. He also learnt how to build a wall from Neil College, a bricklayer from Contour Brickwork with 35 years’ experience.

The Mayor of Torbay, Gordon Oliver said: “It’s been fascinating learning a trade and meeting some of the apprentices on site at White Rock. The construction industry offers a fantastic career path and it’s great to see such a valuable investment being made by Linden Homes.”

Nigel Palmer, managing director for Linden Homes said: “Linden Homes has just launched a specialised training and education hub (with National Skills Academy for Construction status) at White Rock where schools, trainees and apprentices can learn construction skills, such as carpentry, bricklaying, business administration and plumbing so it was the perfect place to host this event.”

The company is committed to training hundreds of people under its Linden Homes National Apprentice Programme and currently supports 108 apprentices in the South West.

Greg Fitzgerald, executive chairman for Galliford Try, has climbed the ranks since he began his career as an apprentice. He commented: “Open Doors provides a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the excellent work taking place on our sites while giving young people an insight into what a career in construction has to offer. We are delighted to be supporting this event, with a record number of sites taking part this year. Well done to everyone who has helped to make this happen.”
