Kickstarting Community Spirit The Linden Way (West Midlands)
30 Aug 2012

Donors from Birmingham have responded generously to Linden Homes’ appeal to collect hundreds of sports kits for disadvantaged young people in the UK and Africa.

The Housebuilder of the Year, which has local offices in Birmingham, has teamed up with charity Kits 4 Causes in its Kit Up, Kit Out summer campaign.

Four full-team kit donations were made by local sports teams at Linden Homes’ The Mews development, in Bartley Green, and The Lanes, in Northfield. In total 90 collection points were set up across the country.

Susan Albrighton is just one of the generous people who decided to donate. Susan has purchased a new home at Linden’s The Lanes scheme and, when she found out about the Kit Up, Kit Out initiative, she knew she was in a position to help. She comments: “I am the player/manager for Tipton Town Ladies and, after visiting The Lanes one afternoon, I discovered that Linden Homes was taking part in this great campaign. As Linden has helped me to buy a home, I thought donating some of our old kits would be a perfect way to say thank you and help disadvantaged young people at the same time.”

Kits 4 Causes will now distribute the clothing to community groups in the UK, designed to help tackle social issues, such as reducing truancy through social inclusion. Others will be sent to countries in Africa to help with projects which use sport to bring communities in conflict together.

Linden Homes West Midlands sales manager Linda Huntington said: “The response to our calls for help from local people, including Susan, has been fantastic. The community really embraced the campaign and I’d like to thank them all for taking the time to dig out their old sports kits for such a worthwhile cause.

“As a leading national business with local developments in Birmingham we’re excited about helping such an inspirational organisation which shares the same philosophy of neighbourhood engagement that we are so passionate about ourselves.”

Linden Homes ran a prize draw for clothing donors taking part in the shirt amnesty to win a brand new sports shirt of their choice. Teams who donated have been entered into a national prize draw to win £1,000 towards new sporting equipment and the winners will be contacted directly.
