Government Minister Shares Support For Sherford Skills Training Scheme
23 May 2017

Government Minister, Robert Halforn has publicly shared his support for the Sherford Skills Training Scheme, outlining its importance in helping to develop skills within the national construction industry. The minister gave his endorsement in a letter addressed to the scheme’s coordinator, Steven Ricketts.

Praising the importance of major local developments, including Sherford, and their role in developing skills and models of training provision, the minister also outlined the Government’s commitment to developing the construction workforce nationally.

As the Minister of State for Apprenticeships and Skills, Robert Halforn is responsible for driving the national apprenticeship agenda. This includes developing career and education opportunities across sectors to help reach the Government target of delivering three million new apprenticeships by 2020.

Launching nearly two years ago, the Sherford Skills Training Scheme aims to improve manual skills, boost the local construction industry and help young people into employment, with £250,000 being invested into the Scheme by the Sherford Consortium – the network of homebuilders responsible for the development, Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey.

Delivered in partnership with Plymouth City College and South Devon College, the scheme aims to provide training, experience and long-term employment opportunities during every phase of the major new community’s construction. This includes, practical experience during every key phase of the development, from initial groundworks to the completion of house build.

Steven Ricketts, Sherford Skills Training Scheme Coordinator said: “The support from the Minister is vital in helping to demonstrate the value of the Sherford Skills Training Scheme and its role in helping to support the region’s economic growth and employment landscape. It has never been more important to help people gain practical experience to assist them in gaining access to employment.

“Sherford is one of the region’s largest community developments, and has a significant role to play in helping to stimulate the construction industry. The scheme is just one example of how young people can become involved in large scale developments, benefitting not just individuals but also the surrounding community – providing people with the necessary skills and training opportunities to develop professionally.”
