Pupils in Bermondsey have celebrated the official handover of two new classrooms, thanks to a £235,000 community partnership between their school and award-winning housebuilder Linden Homes.
St. Joseph’s RC Primary School in George Row now enjoys 2,300 square feet of extra teaching space thanks to the redevelopment of The Tanyard by Linden Homes. The land adjoining the school has been turned into a collection of high quality apartments with classrooms on the ground floor directly accessed by the school.
The Headteacher and pupils from the school attended a recent ceremony to hand over the facilities, along with Southwark Council leader, Councillor Peter John, and Steve Bangs, Managing Director of Linden Homes South East.
The new classrooms are light and airy thanks to large windows which look out directly onto the school maze and amphitheatre. An office and reception area completes the new facility.
As part of the agreement, Linden Homes also refurbished a second office in St. Joseph’s main building which is used by the after school club team.
The wider, local community will benefit too as the classrooms will soon be made available for community use. There is secure, direct access from the street which will separate community users from the main school building.
The associated collection of apartments has already sold out, including six affordable homes delivered through another fruitful relationship, this time between Linden Homes and Asra Housing Group.
Linden Homes South East Managing Director, Steve Bangs said: “We are very proud of our partnership here in Bermondsey. We worked with residents to deliver high-quality apartments, classrooms, community facilities and affordable homes too.
“The Tanyard is a clear example of how housebuilders can work hand-in-hand with the local community to achieve great things that leave a lasting legacy for local families. We hope to use this model at other sites around the UK.”
Headteacher Mr Macauley said: “The school is making full use of our new educational facilities and the children have benefitted enormously from the extra space available.”
Councillor Peter John said: “I was very impressed with the new classrooms provided for St Joseph’s School. All too often the benefits and investment that developments offer acommunity are abstract or simple financial contributions. I hope to be able to see more examples of new homes being provided in conjunction with real local benefits in the future.”
