Housewarming party officially welcomes first residents to new community

Toasting to the future of Sherford, residents were officially welcomed to the new community at the town’s housewarming party. Taking place last week, residents had the opportunity to meet their neighbours, those responsible for the creation of the new town, and community leaders.

Alongside the families now living at Sherford, attendees included those who have helped turn the vision of Sherford into a reality, playing an instrumental part in its creation throughout its 20-year history. This included Sherford Consortium members, as well as local councillors from Plymouth City Council and South Hams District Council.

Also on hand to welcome residents, as well as playing a vital part in the community’s future, were Helen Tipping - Headteacher of the town’s first primary school - and Tom Brassil – Sherford’s Minister, who is soon to move into the town’s vicarage along with his family.

Set to be a community run by its residents, attendees were also introduced to members of the Sherford Community Trust. Playing an integral part of life at Sherford, the Trust will be responsible for protecting, maintaining and managing the town for the residents.

Sherford’s first resident Chris Taylor said: “It was fantastic to meet my new neighbours, as well as being welcomed by those who built my home. The party also gave us with a chance to hear from the people who will help run the community and the local area. I am very proud to be a part of Sherford and it will certainly be exciting to watch it grow and develop even more in the years to come!”

Brian Deacon, Sales and Marketing Director, Sherford Consortium said: “Sherford has a long history, and the housewarming party provided an opportunity to reflect on how far it has come and how much has been achieved. Creating Sherford has been, and continues to be, an amazing achievement and it was wonderful to celebrate with those who now consider Sherford their home.”

Wayne Bennett, Sales and Marketing Director, Sherford Consortium said: “In time, Sherford will be home to 12,000 people, four schools, numerous businesses, community facilities and much more – and at the very heart of what makes this town a community, is its residents. It was great to bring everyone together for a housewarming party, helping neighbours get to know one another and raising our glasses to an exciting future!”

Cllr Michael Hicks, South Hams District Council’s Lead Member for the new Town of Sherford said: “It was a pleasure to see all of the residents turning up to the party. It was also a great pleasure to experience the first sense of community in the new town. Seeing the community begin to develop is a milestone that we have waited a long time for.”
