Toby Bond, 16, is a carpentry apprentice at Linden Homes’ White Rock development in Paignton.
Toby has been an apprentice for seven months and works on site four days a week. The on-the-job training is complemented by attendance at South Devon College on a day release basis where he is working towards a NVQ2 in Site Carpentry. The two year course can then be extended to a NVQ3.
The company is committed to training hundreds of people under its Linden Homes National Apprentice Programme and currently supports 108 apprentices in the South West.
Speaking about his apprenticeship, Toby said: “When I was at school I loved woodwork and knew straight away that it was something I wanted to do as a career. My dad is a self-employed builder and I’ve helped him out at the weekends and really enjoyed it so I knew what to expect.
“I love the variety the job provides, one minute you’re building a staircase, the next minute you’re installing a kitchen – it’s really interesting and I can’t wait to learn how to build a roof.
“I’d definitely recommend going down the apprenticeship path, there’s a great team on site and I love that I’m earning and learning at the same time.”
Toby lives in Ivybridge and commutes to work each day on the bus. He achieved nine A*-C GCSEs at Ivybridge Community College. Toby has played tennis for Devon and also enjoys running and going to the gym in his spare time.
