Four young people have been offered apprenticeships at Galliford Try after successfully completing a unique work experience programme, Build Salford.
Following a five week, paid work trial, Josh Flower (painting and decorating), 20, Lewis Oxton (plumbing), 17, Joe Vo (joiner), 17, and Luke Clarke (painting and decorating), 17, will now start a six week traineeship with the Galliford Try team, learning more about the construction industry and beginning to build their careers.
Along with Galliford Try, Build Salford brings together some of the biggest and best construction and social housing organisations operating in the city including Salix Homes, Seddon, Keepmoat Regeneration, Keepmoat Homes, Caseys, Together Housing, Great Places and Clarion. The programme is managed by Salford City College and supported by Salford City Council, to allow young people to gain valuable industry insights and take advantage of Salford’s construction boom.
During their five-week trial, the apprentices benefited from a wide range of industry experiences including, guest lectures, site visits and crucial industry-focused training.
Alyssa Knowles, development coordinator, at Galliford Try, said: “There are so many career routes within the construction industry and it’s fantastic that initiatives like Build Salford are helping young people to explore those options and take that first step.
“We were really pleased with the enthusiasm and progress that Josh, Lewis, Joe and Luke showed during their work trials so we’re delighted to now offer them apprenticeships to develop their careers further.”
A further seven young people secured apprenticeships at other organisations on the back of work trials through Build Salford and because of the success of the scheme, which only launched this year, Build Salford 2 is already in the pipeline for early 2018.
