When Matthew and Emily Garton married two years ago they just couldn’t stretch to a 10 per cent deposit on a new home – so they rented a two bedroom flat instead. As they began to think about the future and the possibility of family, they realised they had to find something bigger.
“My brother lived in a shared ownership property in southern England and we realised that was our best chance of getting onto the housing ladder ourselves,” said Emily (28), a teaching assistant at a local school. Her husband Matthew (27) works at Sainsburys. They met after Emily moved up from Bedfordshire to attend university in Scarborough.
The couple visited Linden Homes’ Cayton Reach development in Scarborough and quickly realised they could purchase a share in a three bedroom semi-detached home for the same amount of monthly outgoings they were paying for their rented accommodation. It almost seemed too good to be true.
They used Home Reach – a scheme that enables purchasers to buy a share of the property and effectively rent the remainder. They can increase their share of the property as and when they can afford it.
“We got the information in February, reserved in March and moved in on May 4. The Linden staff were brilliant, particularly sales adviser Paula, who was supportive throughout the whole process,” added Emily.
“Without Home Reach we would still be in that rented two bedroom flat and we can now look forward to a bright future in our own family home,” she added.
