Speeding Drivers Urged To Slow Down By Year Two Student Jodie
28 Nov 2016

With Road Safety Week taking place on 21st – 27th November, local housebuilder, Linden Homes has joined forces with St Edburg’s School in Bicester to encourage drivers to watch their speed when driving near the primary school.

The year two children from St Edburg’s were set the task by Linden Homes to create a poster that will encourage drivers to slow down with the winning poster being made into a real road sign that will sit outside the school entrance. The judges at Linden Homes then had the pleasure of reviewing all the very unique entries and chose primary school pupil, Jodie Clark as the winner.

The competition follows a recent presentation from Linden Homes to the children as construction work continues on a series of new and exciting properties at the Linden Homes’ Hawkswood development, which is situated just over a mile away from the primary school in Kingsmere.

Lauren Petry, year two teacher at St Edburg’s was delighted with how well the children responded to the task:

“The children really enjoyed creating the posters and I know Jodie cannot wait to see her artwork come to life! Road safety is extremely important and not only is it important for the children to understand it but also to encourage others who drive by the school to be aware of small children who may be attempting to cross the road.

“The competition couldn’t have come at a better time as we’ve had a number of parents commenting on the speed of traffic outside the school and we feel the addition of the road signs will encourage drivers to slow down and be more aware.

“We’re really enjoying the partnership that has evolved with Linden Homes and we’re excited to continue this relationship in the future.”

Road Safety Week takes place between the 21st and 27th of November and is a national initiative to raise awareness of how both drivers and pedestrians can keep safe on the roads. Road Safety Week began in 1997 and is an annual event to raise awareness of the measures that can be taken to reduce the growing number of needless deaths and injuries that occur on the roads.

Suzanne Irons, sales and marketing director at Linden Homes Thames Valley commented:

“With the Hawkswood development being situated so close to St Edburg’s school and having heard the traffic outside the school as being rather busy during the school run, we thought the poster competition would be a fun, but relevant way to get the children involved in Road Safety Week whilst also encouraging drivers to watch their speed when driving near the school.”

“We hope that by linking up St Edburg’s, we can make children aware of how to keep themselves safe around an active construction site, and also help slow the traffic and reduce any risk of accidents occurring.

“It was a pleasure visiting the school earlier in the year and it’s also been a pleasure working with them on this competition. We’ve ordered the road signs of Jodie’s poster and we’re looking forward to installing these for the school.”
