Retired But Reluctant To Downsize? Small Changes Could Make A Big Difference (Midlands)
07 Oct 2013

DEVELOPER Linden Homes is hoping its advice on downsizing will buck the national trend of reluctance in retired people to move to a smaller property.

The results of a Yougov poll for retirement housing provider Hanover reveals that retired people are not particularly keen to downsize despite acknowledging a range of financial and lifestyle benefits.

Just 16 per cent of the 445 retired people who took part expected to move to a home with fewer bedrooms by the end of 2017, even though research suggests that a retired household that moved from a three-bedroom to a two-bedroom home could typically save £1,530 through lower bills and maintenance costs.

The amount could be even higher for people with an outstanding mortgage or those currently renting – up to £4,000 in some cases.

On the back of the research, developer Linden Homes claims the cost efficiencies can continue if downsizers move into a brand new property – like the exclusive range of two-bedroom apartments at the Orchid development in the Rutland market town of Oakham.

Ticking the boxes of people looking for a smaller, manageable, quality home in a fantastic location – close to a traditional town centre and amenities.

And here are some other advantages of downsizing:

  • Less financial burdens

  • Not so much housework

  • Far fewer repairs and maintenance to do in the home
  • No need to spend so many hours gardening

  • The property feels more manageable and therefore more secure
  • Feeling content knowing there’s no more need to move again

  • A great cleansing exercise – a chance to clear out clutter

  • A chance to have nearly all new furniture and pictures!

  • Peace of mind of feeling in complete control of the house and everything

Linden Homes sales director Chris Roads said: “The apartments are a wonderful addition to our stunning portfolio in Oakham, and offer a slightly different style of living – which in light of this recent research seems a perfect opportunity for our customers to save money and reap the many benefits of a smaller property with little or no maintenance.

“The open plan design of the apartments gives a feeling of space and airiness, and the overall style lends itself perfectly to buyers looking for a quality home but on a slightly smaller and easier to manage scale.”
