Official government statistics have revealed that more than 97,578 first time buyers bought homes using Help to Buy, since the equity loan scheme was introduced in April 2013.
New homeowner, Aaron Murphy (30), was one of the final purchasers at Linden Homes Chiltern’s Nash Mills Wharf to take advantage of the scheme, before all properties at the development sold out. Having always lived in Hemel Hempstead, Help to Buy meant Aaron could remain in the local area, close to his family and friends.
Aaron explained: “Help to Buy enabled me to get my foot on the property ladder at a local development that really appealed to me. Before buying, I was renting a two-bedroom house about five minutes away from Nash Mills Wharf. Upon my decision to buy, I viewed several other properties in the area, however I didn’t come across anything that quite struck the balance between price and lifestyle until I came across Linden Homes’ development.”
Nash Mills Wharf offered Help to Buy across all its apartments, and for Aaron, opting for the scheme was an easy decision:
“I wasn’t initially looking for an apartment but several of my friends had already bought at the development and kept recommending it to me. I put a reservation down on my very first viewing of a beautiful, modern two-bed property. As well as the design of the apartment, the location also really appealed to me – both Hemel Hempstead high street and central London can be reached in half an hour.
“My new apartment at Nash Mills Wharf is located on the canal side so it is very peaceful and private compared to the location of my previous home, near a train station. My allocated parking space also saves the worry of finding somewhere to park – as a plumber, I don’t necessarily get home at the same time every day, so avoiding the 10-minute hunt for a parking space after a daily commute is a huge relief.”
Next to the Grand Union Canal, Nash Mills Wharf launched in 2012, the development has consistently been popular with first time buyers as apartment prices started from £315,000.
Simon Pendlebury is the sales and marketing director at Linden Homes Chiltern:
“It’s been an absolute pleasure to hear the success stories of numerous first time buyers like Aaron since we introduced Help to Buy at Nash Mills Wharf. The development has been successful locally in helping 25 to 30 year olds get on the property ladder.
“In other areas, the prospect of buying your own home can seem almost unrealistic due to ever-increasing prices, so it’s great to round off at Nash Mills Wharf knowing the difference Help to Buy has made to our residents.”
