Glen Hilton, a recently promoted project manager from Linden Homes South West, has been awarded a prestigious NHBC (National Housebuilding Council) Pride in the Job Quality Award for building homes of an exceptional quality at Sherford.
Now in its 37th year, Pride in the Job recognises the UK's top site managers – with more than 16,000 people competing for the annual awards. As well as undergoing spot checks on the day-to-day running of the sites, each candidate is assessed across 37 areas of site management, including their technical knowledge, consistency in the build process and the quality controls they have in place.
Glen has been selected as one of the best site managers in the UK, joining almost 450 other Quality Award winners. Commenting on the announcement, Glen, 36, said: “I am incredibly proud to have won a Quality Award. Winning means a great deal to me but it has really been a team effort to maintain such high standards, every single member of the team has helped contribute to this award.
“It’s been a challenge working on such a flagship and busy site but I’ve loved every minute. I get huge job satisfaction in seeing Sherford take shape; the land is being transformed into a thriving community where new families can create homes out of our houses. As a Plymouth boy I can’t think of a better place to work and I am especially proud to have won a Quality Award at Sherford.”
Created as part of a consortium, Sherford will see 5,500 classically designed homes built as part of an exciting new town, with a market square, schools, shops, a leisure centre, plus woodland and wildlife habitats. Nestled in the South Hams, with easy access to Plymouth, the new town will incorporate high quality homes with a host of amenities.
Glen, who lives in Mannamead, Plymouth, joined the company almost 20 years ago as a carpentry apprentice. He studied towards an HNC in Site Management at Plymouth City College and worked his way up to the position of project manager.
Talking about his background, Glen said: “My grandfather was a carpenter and my father was a project manager for a housing association so I was very keen to stay in the housebuilding industry.
“The apprenticeship route worked really well for me and enabled me to gain valuable work experience while studying. I have been with the company ever since, constantly learning and taking note of what works well, hopefully meaning that we’re always improving as a site team.”
The Quality Award winners will now be shortlisted for the Seal of Excellence Awards, which will be presented to the top 130 site managers on 15th September.
Bradley Davison, managing director of Linden Homes South West, said: “We’re delighted that Glen has been acknowledged as one of the best site managers in the country. Competition is fierce and we’re very proud that he has been recognised on a development that he is so passionate about. He’s been honoured for his constant strive towards perfection and we couldn’t be more pleased.”
Nick Cunningham, NHBC regional director, said: “Congratulations to Glen, who should be commended for building homes of an outstanding standard in the region. The Pride in the Job Awards play an important role in NHBC’s work in supporting the industry to raise standards through the celebration and sharing of best practice.
“Pride in the Job recognises site managers who produce the best quality new homes, built and finished to the highest possible standards. Most importantly, homeowners who buy a Pride in the Job award-winning home benefit from a high-quality product. On behalf of everyone at NHBC, I would like to congratulate Glen on this fantastic achievement.”
