Chelmsford is a tight knit community. It’s well known amongst local people that once you’ve lived there, you won’t want to move away.

And if you’ve lived in Chelmsford all your life, there is a good chance that you were born at the Old St John’s Hospital – around half of the town’s population were.

This local building company – itself based in Chelmsford - is creating a new development of new and refurbished homes on the site of the old hospital. Instead of wards, consulting rooms and maternity suites, the St John’s site is being reborn as a series of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes.

The refurbishment work will see many historic parts of the hospital brought back to life: Parts of the buildings date back to the mid 19th century so it’s likely that the refurbished homes will encompass some of the original features of the building.

Lying on the edge of Chelmsford, St John’s offers a very convenient place to live. You can still commute to London from here – but living in Chelmsford rather than Chelsea, you’ll get a lot more for your money.

Gareth Jacob, Linden Homes’ sales and marketing director, says that while Chelmsford has always been a popular place to live – its popularity is growing:

“Chelmsford is just over half an hour away by train from Liverpool Street station. It’s easily commutable and interest in the town is growing because you can get so much more for your money here than you can nearer to the capital. Because of this burgeoning popularity, we’re expecting a lot of interest in St John’s, both from within Chelmsford and from further afield. We would advise people to register their interest as soon as possible if they think they might be interested in living here. Once they’ve registered, we will have their details and can let them know when homes are going to be available and keep them updated on news from the development.”
