...Than Hard Hats And Construction Sites

The Guildford division of housebuilder Linden Homes was on hand to help youngsters looking for careers advice during an educational evening at Cranleigh School ahead of National Apprentice Week (March 9 to 13).

A team of staff, led by Managing Director Peter Youll, spoke to pupils at a careers fair held at the school and helped dispel the common misconception that a job in the construction industry is all about hard hats and building sites!

In the past two years alone the house building industry has created 106,000 jobs from bricklayers and architects to surveyors and interior designers.

At the careers fair, on Monday (March 2), pupils were given information about the diverse range of professions on offer and the apprentice and training schemes available to school leavers and graduates, provided by Linden Homes and its parent company, Galliford Try.

“Linden Homes builds around 3,000 homes each year from eco-friendly homes at Graylingwell Park, in Chichester – one of the UK’s largest carbon neutral developments - to executive family houses at Swallowhurst, our flagship scheme right here in Cranleigh,” comments Peter Youll, managing director of Linden Homes Guildford.

“In order to deliver such a diverse range of projects, we need an equally diverse range of staff from project managers and site managers to surveyors, accountant and land buyers, as well as roles in sales and marketing. We need men and women to fill these roles and our training and graduate schemes are a great way to get into the sector.”

Peter was joined at the school, by graduate land buyer Tristan Snell, who was able to give pupils a first-hand account of how the apprentice and training schemes offered by Linden Homes have helped move along his career path.

Tristan comments: I’ve learnt a lot about the industry already in the 18 months I’ve been with Linden Homes Guildford. I’ve been given an insight into the processes of acquiring land, I’ve shadowed a site manager at Swallowhurst and I’ve number-crunched alongside the team in the finance department.

“It’s good to be learning on the job from people who have a lot of experience and who are always generous with their advice.”

Linden Homes’ visit to Cranleigh School coincides with a campaign launched by the House Building Federation focusing on the 400,000 jobs being created within the industry.

Cranleigh School is just a few minutes’ drive from Swallowhurst, Linden Homes’ flagship scheme in Surrey, built in partnership with Wates Developments. Homes at the second phase are now available.
