Linden Homes’ third annual charity golf day has raised a staggering £20,733.90 for Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust and local Torbay campaign ‘Footsteps for Louie’.
Key stakeholders were invited to the event where they played golf at Torquay’s 18 hole golf course. There was also a hole in one competition to win a BMW, a putting competition, a raffle and an auction.
Nigel Palmer, managing director of Linden Homes, said: “Last year we were thrilled that our first golf day raised £18,000 and we really didn’t think we’d be able to beat that total again. We are absolutely delighted that this year’s event was such a resounding success - not only was it fun for everyone involved but we were spoilt with the beautiful weather and managed to raise a huge sum of money for three very worthwhile and local charities.”
Devon Air Ambulance Trust raises the funds to keep two emergency air ambulances flying. This year they have to raise in the region of £4.5 million to keep both the helicopters airborne. This sum rises to £5.5 million next year when the service extends its flying hours into the autumn into the dark. Senior pilot Rob Mackie spoke at the golf day, emphasising the charity’s vital work in one of the UK’s largest counties.
Caroline Creer, Devon Air Ambulance Trust’s fundraising director, said: “This is a fantastic amount of money. The support from all involved is very much appreciated and we would like to thank the team at Linden Homes for all their hard work. Every single penny raised will make a huge difference to our service and the people of Devon.”
The Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust has the challenge of serving a scattered population, rugged landscape, isolated rural and island communities, as well as secluded beaches and a slower road network. Each year the organisation flies around 700 rescue missions, delivering fast and effective medical care to patients in their moment of need.
Susie Smith, head of fundraising for Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust, said: “Being able to raise such a high figure, while having fun in the process, is just phenomenal! We are so grateful for the money, which will ensure we continue to provide the lifesaving service for the people of Cornwall.”
The last charity to benefit from almost £7,000 is Footsteps for Louie, a local Torbay campaign to raise much needed funds for a life-changing operation for Louie, a two year old boy with Celebral Palsy from Torquay. The operation in America will permanently reduce the stiffness in his legs, enabling him to walk independently.
Nick Skinner, Louie’s father, said: “Louie is constantly smiling, singing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' and will do anything for a chocolate button! He takes everything in his stride; we are overjoyed with the total raised and blown away by the support shown. You just can’t put a price on independence and being able to walk will make our little boy so very happy.”
Another charity golf day is already being planned for next year.
