Linden Homes holds 'Discover Nature' event at Oak Farm Meadow, Stowupland

Linden Homes is holding a ‘Discover Nature’ event at its Oak Farm Meadow location in Stowupland this month.

The housebuilder is inviting potential customers, residents and members of the public along to the family-friendly event from 10am to 4pm on Friday 28 July to find out more about biodiversity at the location, which lies on the western edge of the village.

A member of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society will give a talk on the importance of protecting the habitat of hedgehogs, while activities on the day will include guided tours of the wildflower meadow on site, I-spy games for children and a bug hunt.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust and Stowupland Biodiversity Group will also be in attendance, along with local representatives from the Green Party, who have been successful in holding the majority vote to represent Mid Suffolk.

Linden Homes has designed Oak Farm Meadow to promote local wildlife and preserve natural habitats wherever possible. As well as its wildflower meadow, the site also features woodland areas, bird and bat boxes, a community orchard and ‘hedgehog highways’.

Jason Colmer, sales and marketing director at Linden Homes, said: “We are very proud of Oak Farm Meadow, where we have set aside 40 per cent of the site as public open space, and have created a biodiverse environment which has the needs of the local wildlife as its focus.

“This event will provide the opportunity for families to enjoy an educational and interactive day at the start of the long school summer holidays. There will be activities to satisfy the curiosity of youngsters and adults, including an I-spy challenge where children will be given magnifying glasses and asked to find a range of insects.

“The day will also give visitors the chance to see ecological products that have been incorporated into the housing location. They will see how swift bricks and bat bricks incorporated into the gable ends of houses and installed in trees provide nesting spots for swifts and other birds and roosting and hibernation areas for bats.

“Another benefit of the event will be to explain the value of the ‘hedgehog highways’ – strategically placed holes in fences to allow the animals to wander freely across the location. Visitors will see how the community orchard will not only provide fresh fruit but also provide valuable foraging opportunities for the local wildlife.
