Ivor Goodsite Visits South Tyneside
19 Jul 2012

A very special visitor called in to Simonside Primary School in Jarrow recently where he was welcomed by deputy head teacher, Edward Jackson and more than 150 children aged four to eleven years.

Ivor Goodsite, the mascot for the Considerate Constructors Scheme, came to promote safety on and around construction sites with Mark Wilson, regeneration director for Galliford Try Partnerships (Galliford Try), who gave a safety talk to the boys and girls about the different types of hazards they may come across.

As associate members of the scheme, Galliford Try is committed to engaging with the communities in which it is working.

Given the proximity to the summer holiday period, Mr Jackson welcomed the opportunity for the children to hear at first-hand about the dangers of playing around building sites.  He said:

“The lessons the children have learned from Ivor will benefit them both now and in later life.  It is important that they get a grounding in health and safety within a variety of different contexts since this makes it easier for them to handle new situations and makes them aware of danger.”

Mark Wilson, added:  “Our work with Ivor Goodsite and the Considerate Constructors Scheme forms a very important part of our community engagement strategy.  The safety of all who may be affected by the construction work we undertake is paramount.  Children of this age are very receptive and keen to learn, which makes the visits a real pleasure.”

Years 5 and 6 also heard about the entry qualifications needed for careers in construction.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme is an independent national initiative which aims to improve the image of the construction industry by encouraging best practice beyond statutory requirements and is concerned about any area of construction activity that may directly or indirectly impact on the image of the industry as a whole.  The main areas of focus are the general public, the workforce and the environment.
