International Women's Day 2018 - Linden Homes Champions Women In Property
08 Mar 2018

Recent research from Women in Property highlights that over 40 percent of those working in the property sector do not feel there are enough female role models in their organisations . This is a finding that Linden Homes is actively seeking to combat, through initiatives such as its Management Trainee programme, which attracts female talent into the sector from a school leaver age.

With 8th March marking International Women’s Day, Linden Homes is celebrating the 30 percent of female trainees and graduates attracted to the business, which is helping to ensure that the myth of the male-dominated sector is dispelled from entry level to the top of the business. Although Women in Property identifies that women represent just 15% of the workforce nationally, Linden Homes is proud to be surpassing the national trend with a 35% strong female workforce – although it recognises that there is still more to be done.

Women across Linden Homes hold a variety of job roles at levels across the board with 32 percent of commercial positions being fulfilled by females and almost half (46 percent) working in fiscal management. Presently, Linden Homes also boasts 30 per cent of land and planning roles fulfilled by females, in context of the traditionally higher percentage, in sales and marketing disciplines.

Amy Savage is one of these employees as Land Manger at Linden Homes South East who has enjoyed a fast-paced journey of working in the sector: “The property industry is a small world and it pays to network and build up your contacts. I have gone from Trainee Land Buyer to Land Manager in just two years, whilst doing my graduate scheme. Land isn’t typically a female career choice, but I’d encourage those considering their career options, to not rule it out!”

Speaking of the equality agenda across the sector this International Women’s Day, Tom Nicholson, divisional chairman at Linden Homes commented: “International Women’s Day celebrates the social, cultural and political achievements of women around the globe. Although our industry is traditionally weighted towards men, we are seeing a shift change in more women entering our workplace in an increasing variety of roles.

“We recognise that the potential talent pool may not have considered our industry and therefore it requires investment, such as our commitment to our Management Trainee scheme to attract those not only at trainee level, but also for those wanting to come back into the workplace who have transferable skills.

“Our sponsorship of the Women in Property’s National Student Awards for the third year running is another way in which we are endeavouring to drive a step change in the opportunities available to women in the sector. Females who are considering their career options – whether that be at school, college, university or at a different stage in life – housebuilding has so many routes open to pursue.”

International Women’s Day is a global initiative whereby businesses, organisations and individuals comes together to celebrate women in all worlds of work and from all walks of life.
