A housebuilder is providing homes for a host of wildlife on an eco-friendly new housing development in Stowupland.
Linden Homes is creating a nature lovers’ paradise at Oak Farm Meadow, a development of 143 two to five-bedroom houses and public open space on the western edge of the village.
The needs of birds, bats, badgers, hedgehogs, reptiles and insects have been put at the forefront of the design with a number of ecologically-friendly adaptations on the site.
These include the creation of a community orchard, woodland areas and a wildlife meadow, all of which will help support pollinators, while swift bricks and bat bricks – which provide nesting spots for swifts and other birds, and roosting and hibernation areas for the local bat population – are being incorporated into the gable ends of houses on the development.
The development will also feature bat and bird boxes among the established trees, as well as a ‘hedgehog highway’ with holes in fencing to allow the animals to wander freely across the site, wildlife-friendly lighting with dark areas, and log piles in green spaces to provide shelter and hibernation areas for reptiles such as the slow worm and the common lizard.
Jason Colmer, sales and marketing director of Linden Homes Eastern, said: “The pandemic has seen a lot of people reassess what is important to them when it comes to buying a house and choosing a place to live.
“This redefining of priorities has seen an increase in demand for homes in the countryside, with easy access to green open spaces and outdoor activities in natural habitats high on the list of importance.
“What we are doing at Oak Farm Meadow is putting ecology front and centre of our plans. We are actively promoting the rural way of life by enhancing the local environment and protecting the resident wildlife with a number of proactive ecological initiatives.”
Linden Homes, which is part of the Vistry Group, is building 143 properties on the site, with 96 houses for private sale and 47 homes provided as affordable housing for local people through rent or shared ownership. A showhome opened on site in June.
Jason said: “We are creating a ground-breaking biodiverse environment here at Oak Farm Meadow and it is proving to be very popular.
“The wide mix of housing provides an opportunity for a range of homebuyers to live in a great development of which 40 per cent is set aside for public open spaces.
“We are not forgetting the needs of human residents as we are providing electric car charging points and lots of cycle and footpaths.
“The ethos at Oak Farm Meadow is that people and animals can live in a sustainable and a mutually beneficial environment which could prove to be a model for future developments to follow.”
There are currently three and four-bedroom homes available to reserve at Oak Farm Meadow.
