Stepping into a boxing ring and taking on a series of opponents in front of a sell-out 2,000 strong crowd can be daunting enough – but more so when you’re a sporting novice!
Linden Homes West Yorkshire site manager John Firth is a boxing beginner, and in just a few short weeks will be hoping to pack a punch for charity.
Leeds Royal Armouries is the venue for the White Collar Boxing event in aid of Cancer Research UK, where John is one of a handful of amateur boxers taking part.
Based at the Brompton Folds development in Apperley Bridge, John has only been in training since January – with his ‘shadow boxing’ provoking on-site banter among his colleagues.
John explained: “I’ve never done anything like this before and I suppose you could say I’m going from couch potato to ‘Rocky’ in just eight weeks!
“I wanted to do something different and something to challenge myself, and this seemed the perfect thing to do, especially as it is for such a worthy cause. The charity has paid for eight weeks’ training and has been really supportive of everyone taking part.”
John has already smashed through his original fundraising target of £500 and has set himself a new goal of £1,500. He is currently the highest fundraiser among those taking part, with LHWE adding to the coffers.
LHWY managing director Scott Stothard said: “We are delighted for John and very happy to be supporting his efforts for such a worthy charity. We wish him well for the event itself and a number of colleagues will be ringside on the night to support him.”
The event takes place on Saturday 24th March.
