Derelict Footbridge Removed As Part Of Factory Site's Redevelopment
03 Jul 2017

A derelict footbridge used by workers at the former Cincinnati engineering works in Birmingham has been removed as the factory site’s redevelopment enters its final phase.

The work has been carried out as part of the Cincinnati housing development, which is taking shape on the former factory site.

Linden Homes is building 101 new homes for sale at Cincinnati, which fronts onto the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and has been named to acknowledge the site’s industrial past.

The dilapidated footbridge linked the former factory site to a staff car park on the south side of the canal, and had remained fenced off since the factory’s closure in 2008.

Linda Huntington, Head of Sales for Linden Homes West Midlands, said: “The derelict footbridge at Cincinnati once provided a convenient route across the canal for workers at the factory, but since its closure it had fallen into a state of disrepair and had become something of an eyesore.

“The bridge’s removal will help to improve the canalside setting, which has already been greatly enhanced by the redevelopment of the disused factory site into a collection of high-quality new homes.

“Construction work is now reaching the final stage at Cincinnati, and we look forward to seeing the development continue to take shape.”

The Cincinnati factory made machinery including lathes and bore machines for businesses across the UK and further afield, employing around 2,000 people at its peak.

But the buildings fell into disrepair after the factory closed in 2008, following 73 years of production.

Linden Homes’ plans to redevelop the derelict 2.54-hectare site were granted in December 2015, with construction work beginning shortly afterwards.
