With the long summer holidays just around the corner, there is a warning to adventure-seeking children – and their parents – about the dangers of building sites.
The timely message comes from Linden Homes North as building work at its developments across the region continues throughout the summer.
Each year, a number of children are injured as a result of construction site accidents in the UK, as youngsters seek out a seemingly exciting place to play.
Latest figures from the Health & Safety Executive reveal that since 2011, 109 under 16s have been injured in construction site accidents, resulting in the death of one child.
The worst period over the past five years was 2013/14, when there were 31 reported accidents.
In line with the HSE, Linden Homes is encouraging parents to warn their children of the dangers of playing on or near building sites.
Linden Homes East Yorkshire (formerly Linden Homes North), production director Darron Facey said: "Understandably some children are drawn to construction sites as exciting places to play, but they are not playgrounds and playing on them can have potentially serious consequences.
“The school holidays present an ideal opportunity for a timely reminder to children and parents about the dangers of construction sites – many of which continue to remain active throughout the summer.
“The school holidays create more opportunity for children to play outdoors, but we would appeal to parents to check that their youngsters are in a safe environment when playing.
“While our developments have clear signage and are secured in non-operating hours, much of the machinery and materials we use remain on site – which could have very serious consequences if in the wrong hands.”
Linden Homes North does have strict and visible guidelines in place at each construction site, and there is also safety advice on the company website for legitimate visitors to any of its developments.
