There Is An 'up' Side To Downsizing To A Brand New Home - Says Developer

There was a time when downsizing used to only mean one thing – a smaller property in later life.

However, with a recent report suggesting that a lack of suitable housing is preventing many over 55s in the UK from moving, it may be time for older home owners to think about a brand new, smaller property.

According to an annual homeowner survey conducted by YouGov (for the Home Owners Alliance and BLP Insurance), more than 500,000 homeowners aged 55+ want to move but can’t find the right property.

The main reason was lack of suitable housing, stress and upheaval, as well as moving away from friends were among the other obstacles.

However, with access to parking, low running costs, being close to the shops and good transport links among the top priorities for the over 55 age bracket, Linden Homes East Yorkshire (formerly Linden Homes North) can tick all the boxes at its many developments around the region.

Sales director Steve Woomble said: “A brand new home can be the solution to these issues, with more and more new homes customers recognising the benefits of moving to somewhere smaller, but still within a favourable location with excellent road, rail and public transport links.

“Coupled with the fact that existing homeowners are also eligible to use the Help To Buy scheme - which is not just limited to first time buyers - many downsizers or last time buyers may not realise the huge savings that can be made.”

Steve added: “There are huge benefits to downsizing, whatever age bracket – but particularly for those whose families have grown up and are looking to reduce their bills, save money and enjoy a maintenance free brand new home.”

Top 10 reasons for downsizing:

1 Less financial burdens (including utility bills) and possibly less spending
2 Not so much housework
3 Far fewer repairs and maintenance to do in the home
4 Less decorating
5 The property feels more manageable and therefore more secure
6 Feeling content knowing there’s no need for a future move
7 A great cleansing exercise – a chance to clear out clutter
8 A chance to invest in some new furniture!
9 No need to spend so many hours gardening – but still having an outdoor space to enjoy.
10 Increased opportunity to travel with the money saved.

Downsizing has its up side – less maintenance, lower bills and more money in your pocket!
