Linden Homes’ Cavendish View Development Will Help Protect Wildlife
17 Sep 2020

National housebuilder Linden Homes (part of Vistry Group) has joined forces with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) to launch a trailblazing campaign to protect hedgehogs and other creatures under threat. Existing developments across the country, including the soon to be launched Cavendish View in Thurston, will spearhead the way.

In the industry-first initiative, Linden Homes will install a hedgehog highway at Cavendish View and all future sites wherever possible, as part of the campaign that will also help other small mammals, birds, frogs and insects. Cavendish View is now open where the stunning four-bedroom show home ‘The Leverton’ is available to view. Visitors may also spot a hedgehog hotel, hidden in the garden ready to welcome it’s first residents!

At Cavendish View, which offers a superb mix of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes, the hedgehog highways will help one of the nation’s favourite animals roam freely at night between gardens. The housebuilder has also donated £5,000 to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and teamed up with national project Hedgehog Street to further support their work.

Jason Colmer, Sales Director for Linden Homes Eastern, said: “Linden Homes is proud to take the lead in the housebuilding industry and join forces with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to be a part of this initiative. I am delighted Cavendish View is one of our developments where there will be a hedgehog highway. The simple but effective measure of holes created at ground level in fencing and other barriers, is one of many, spearheaded by our new Linden Homes sustainability steering group. This is just one initiative that will help to protect hedgehogs and other wildlife, safely allowing them to find enough food, shelter and mates by allowing access between selected gardens in the development and wilder areas.”

Hedgehogs walk more than a mile every night so need to have the opportunity to move around freely between gardens. Literature will be provided for all house buyers at Cavendish View which will inform them about the best way to help their prickly neighbours.

Fay Vass, chief executive of BHPS, said: “We are delighted that Linden Homes is making this important pledge to help our dwindling population of hedgehogs. Creating holes for hedgehogs in fences and walls is a simple step but it could have a huge impact on the amount of habitat available for hedgehogs following the development of a site. There are many small actions we can all take to help hedgehogs in our gardens and green spaces and joined together those small actions can make a huge difference to a species under threat.”

Jason Colmer added: “We’re looking forward to welcoming more prospective buyers to the development. ‘The Leverton’ show home will give potential house hunters a chance to see what their future home will look like and our sales team will be able to point out the hedgehog hotel and highway to visitors.”

‘The Leverton’ is a double fronted spacious home with four good sized bedrooms perfect for a growing family and with its own study, working from home. It is available with Help to Buy* and buyers can benefit from the recently announced Stamp Duty break. Thurston village offers a delightful rural location and the chance to enjoy village life with nearby Bury St Edmonds offering a wealth of shops, restaurants and attractions, like the Cathedral, to explore.

Cavendish View will be an ideal place to raise a family, helped by the fact that Linden Homes is supporting the provision of a nursery to serve the development and contributing towards a new primary school.
