The New Year Heralds A New Life To St John's Hospital

The New Year is traditionally a time for new beginnings and new resolutions. It may also be the right time to think about buying a new home. 

The Office for Budget Responsibility (an independent but Government funded economic forecaster) has recently predicted a surge in housing market activity which it says will begin in 2013. It estimates that by 2013/14 we could see a 20% rise in the number of people buying and selling homes compared to the previous year. 

It appears the somewhat sluggish market that has persisted over the last few years is about to get a new lease of life.

In tune with these optimistic new beginnings, work has begun at the old St John’s Hospital in Chelmsford where Linden Homes is embarking on a joint venture with Inland Homes. Together, they are turning this historic site into an exciting new development of new and refurbished homes. Once it is complete, it will offer 1 and 2 bed apartments and 2, 3 and 4 bed houses.

Several historic parts of the old hospital building are going to be saved and given a new lease of life. Parts of the site date back to the mid-19th century and over the years the hospital formed very strong links with the town. Although St John’s closed its doors in 2010 when the last of its services were transferred to Broomfield Hospital, its legacy lives on in Chelmsford and it is estimated that around half of the town’s population were born there.
