Linden Homes Western Highlights The Importance Of Training During National Apprenticeship Week
08 Mar 2019

Apprenticeships have evolved over time, in the last few years especially, and are now defined as combining practical, or on the job training, as well as undertaking industry recognised qualifications.

Management trainees make up around five per cent of Linden Homes’ workforce. Speaking about the initiative, Mick Arnold, construction director for Linden Homes Western, said: “Our management trainee scheme combines on the job experience with formal qualifications, enabling people to start earning a salary whilst continuing with their education. Our specific schemes set out a career path but also give the opportunity to gain experience in each part of the business.

“It’s great to see the trainees qualify and excel in their chosen field. National Apprenticeship Week (4th to 8th March) provides a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the dedication of the trainees but also of the strong team supporting them. I started as a trainee site manager so I know first-hand how invaluable these initiatives are, especially when you have a committed team behind them.”

24 year-old Jordan Sheppard from Bristol joined Linden Homes’ management trainee programme 18 months ago. After completing his A levels, Jordan decided he wanted to work in the construction industry and did some labouring and landscaping work in the UK, as well as abroad. Upon his return, he joined Linden Homes as a trainee engineer working within the technical department and has already been promoted to assistant technical coordinator.

Commenting on his time so far in the programme, Jordan commented: “The management trainee programme is a fantastic way to learn about how the different aspects of the business work together to provide high-quality new homes within communities. I’ve spent time on site and with the other departments including: commercial, land, marketing and sales, finance and construction and it really does give you a great overview.

“I am so pleased that I came across the opportunity to work in housebuilding. I’m doing a two year HNC in construction and the built environment at the City of Bristol College and love earning and learning at the same time. It’s been a great balance for me and I can definitely recommend it as a career path!”
