Linden Homes Helps Royal High School Pupils Achieve A Coveted Citb Crest Award
06 Jul 2017

Over 60 pupils at the Royal High School in Bath have obtained a CITB Crest Award after visiting Linden Homes’ exclusive Ensleigh development in Lansdown, Bath.

The 14-15 year old girls spent time on site learning about: the housebuilding process, sustainability, the diverse range of job roles, costings and the different building materials available. The school arranged for the pupils to spend time with some architects and they were then challenged to create their own 10-unit scheme in small groups. Each team formed a housebuilding company and pitched its design to a panel of judges and their peers.

Sarah Williams, regional sales manager at Linden Homes, said: “We were delighted to welcome the girls to site, they were really engaged and asked some insightful questions. The school invited us to judge the developments the students had designed and we were astounded by the level of effort they’d made, especially as they only had two days to complete their project.

“The presentations and displays were fantastic, some had created scale models; there were floor plans, site layouts, computer generated images and one group even created an internal fly-through of one of its homes. The students worked really hard to bring their developments to life and we were impressed that they’d considered different materials and building techniques, and that they’d carried out market research to ensure their development was priced correctly.

“Housebuilding is a male dominated industry and we’re trying to show that it provides a really interesting career path for women too. There are a wide variety of job roles available, from land buyers to technical managers, surveyors to marketing managers – or there may even be a future CEO amongst them!”

The Crest award scheme is managed by the British Science Association and helps young people discover their passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. CREST Awards are highly regarded and are the only STEM scheme endorsed by UCAS for students to highlight in personal statements.

Chemistry teacher and event organiser at the Royal High School, Alison Parr said: “Not only did this project enable our students to visit a live construction site and gain an appreciation of this industry; it also developed their ability to apply their STEM skills and knowledge to a real task. In carrying out the project, the students also improved their team work, time management and presentation skills; all of which are vitally important for their own futures. The support provided by Linden Homes to achieve this was invaluable.”

One pupil commented: “Before I completed this project, I didn’t know what a skilled profession construction was. I also hadn’t thought about the amount of sales and sales workers that are involved in the construction industry – but this project has helped me think about it more.”

Linden Homes is working closely with the local community in Bath. The new homes at Ensleigh have proved very popular since they were launched last year and there are currently four and five bedroom homes available.

Set in an elevated position in the Lansdown area of Bath, Ensleigh is located close to the city centre as well as many schools, including the Royal High School and the new primary school near the development which will be known as the Abbot Alphege Academy.
