Sherford Primary Trust set to welcome pupils in September 2017

The Sherford Consortium, the network of homebuilders responsible for the new South Hams community, today announces that Ivybridge Community Trust has been awarded Secretary of State approval to sponsor the first Sherford primary school, set to open in September 2017. Set in the heart of the community, 420 primary places will be available to children between the ages of 2-11, and will be the first of three planned primary schools to be constructed in the town.

Set to be home to 12,000 people on completion, the permanent primary school, named Sherford Primary Academy, is being funded and constructed by the Sherford Consortium, a joint partnership between, Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Taylor Wimpey. Neighbouring the new community, the Ivybridge Academy Trust, widely known as Ivybridge Community College, has a proven track record of success. The new primary school will become a thriving part of the new Sherford community, as well as the local surrounding area.

Leading the selection process, Devon County Council has undertaken numerous consultations regarding the provision of education in Sherford with the public, local community and schools within the region. The new Sherford Primary Academy will support the Council’s Education Infrastructure Plan, which outlines the expectations and delivery of education in Devon over the next 20 years.

Sherford will be a self-sustaining town, featuring playing areas, sporting grounds, a leisure centre and a 500-acre community park. Parents, or those interested in their children attending the new school are invited to apply via Devon County Council from September 2016. The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the Government’s national housing and regeneration agency, has so far invested over £32million in Sherford.

For further information about the new community, and the broad range of homes available, the public are also invited to visit the home sales office, expected to open summer 2016 or visit www.sherford.org.

Rob Haring, Principal, Ivybridge Community College said: “We believe passionately in providing local solutions to meet local need, therefore it is fantastic to be involved with Sherford and being giving the opportunity to help form and shape a brand new community. Ivybridge Academy Trust has a long and established record in providing educational excellence, and the new Sherford Academy will continue this by inspiring, engaging and motivating children in what is to be one of the most innovative and unique Devon towns.”

“The school will, initially, become the hub of the new community, developing its own unique identity and equip children with the skills and knowledge to succeed from an early age.”

Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for Schools, James McInnes, said: "Devon County Council is committed to local schools for local children, so we want to see the new primary school opening as the first families move into the new homes. The Ivybridge Academy Trust has a longstanding reputation for educational excellence and I am confident that the new primary will set high standards and quickly establish itself at the heart of the new community.”

Paul Boileau, Sherford Consortium adds: “The opening of Sherford Primary Academy marks a significant milestone for the new community development, set to be one of four schools planned to open over the next decade, including a secondary school. Each school will have its own unique identity, integrated at the heart of the community, with children having access to a range of facilities, including playing fields, parks, library, theatre and a sports centre, all within walking distance. We are proud to welcome Ivybridge Academy Trust to Sherford, with the town set to be an ideal location for families looking for a new home alongside excellent local schooling.”
