Her Own Business - Now Her Own Home: At Northfields In Colchester
28 Mar 2013

At 23 years old Jill Hunter set up her own hairdressing business in Great Dunmow. By 26 she owned her own home.

The first she achieved through her own determination and the second, she achieved with a little bit of help from Linden Homes.

Although she works in Great Dunmow, Jill has lots of friends in Colchester. When she began looking for a home to buy in 2011, Colchester was one of the areas she thought she might like to end up. But being so busy at work, she didn’t have time to drive round and look at all the available options. Instead her dad offered to go and look round some of the new build developments in the area on her behalf.

After visiting a few of the new homes, Jill says that he recommended that she should go and see Linden Homes’ Northfields development in Colchester – amongst others.

“I knew it was time to find my own home but I didn’t want to rent – I thought that was just a waste of money. I had Colchester in mind because I thought I might get a better deal there. My Dad looked round a few different places for me and told me that I ought to see Northfields. I’d never heard of Linden Homes before but when I saw the semi-detached two bedroom house, I fell in love with it.”

Jill says her first impressions of this very modern house were that it was just what she was looking for - and that it was really well built.

When people visit Northfields, they often describe it as ‘different’ and ‘modern’. They tend, like Jill, to be impressed with the build quality and the excellent design.

The Northfields homes are white rendered, cedar-clad homes that have been arranged to maximise the space and cleverly put together.

Each new Linden Home at Northfields comes with a ten year NHBC build warranty and a two year customer care warranty. Each home has the latest technology in terms of appliances – oven, hob, extractor and fridge/freezer and all of these are also guaranteed.

And the way new homes are built these days - and the regulations that builders have to comply with - mean that every new home is more energy efficient and greener than ever: It’s estimated that new homes are six times more energy-efficient and generate more than 60% less CO2 emissions than older style homes.

Jill immediately began the process of looking for a mortgage:

“Initially, I was wary of applying for a mortgage as I run my own business, which I thought would make it more difficult to be approved. In the end I went to my local bank – Nationwide – and showed them my payslips and they arranged a mortgage for me. I was lucky enough to have the deposit I needed. I definitely think that it is easier to get a first time buyer mortgage now than it was two years ago.”

Jill says that throughout the buying process – and afterwards - the sales executives on site were very helpful:

“They were great – really I cannot fault them. They were so efficient. When I went on holiday recently they suggested I left the keys with them so they could check on the house for me while I was away.”

“I’ve got lots of friends in Colchester and all of them love this house. Some of them want to move here too! I am really proud of my house. I feel it’s a real achievement... and I love to come home to it. It’s mine.”
