From Hospitals To Homes: A Remarkable Transformation
27 May 2014

During the First World War many stately homes across the country, including Hylands House in Chelmsford, were converted for use as hospitals. It was a theme used to great dramatic effect in the ITV series Downton Abbey.

Today that role is being reversed: At St John’s in Chelmsford, Linden Homes Eastern is working hard to create a new chapter in the life of the old hospital by turning the derelict buildings into beautiful new and refurbished homes.

This is a development that successfully blends old and new: Some of the lovely old red brick buildings have been retained and refurbished to create amazing new homes and apartments, while around them the land is being transformed to create stylish brand new house.

This formula of transforming derelict old hospitals into beautiful new homes is one that has already proved a remarkable success for Linden Homes in the area. Eleven miles away at Burntwood Square in Brentwood, the homes created from and around the Victorian Highwood and Little Highwood hospitals, have now all sold out.

Christie Alaimo is the sales and marketing director for Linden Homes’ Eastern:

“The two developments – St John’s and Burntwood Square - share a similar history and ambiance. Burntwood Square was created first and has now sold out, but St John’s has homes available and, based on what happened in Brentwood, we are expecting these homes to go quickly too. One way to make sure you don’t miss out on a St John’s home is to use our Part Exchange Scheme*.

“Part exchange is like a one stop shop for the purchaser. Once you join the scheme, everything is taken care of. I think of it as the perfect purchaser journey. When you think about it, a lot of the stress of moving house comes from trying to sell your old home. Under part exchange Linden Homes will do that for you. All you have to do is concentrate on your new St John’s home. It tends to make the whole moving process much quicker – you could move into your new home by the summer.”

On another practical note, St John’s is very convenient for commuters (St John’s is just a mile and a half from the train station – and once you’re on the train, Liverpool Street is just 34 minutes away).
