It was purely by chance that Charlie and Sarah happened upon Linden Homes’ Thornbury Park in Isleworth. But it was a chance that led to a total re-think of their future plans.
The couple were in the area looking at an older property on Thornbury Avenue on Friday 13th April this year. It was the second or third time they’d seen this house and were planning some major renovations if they bought it. On this last visit they decided to try and work out a realistic estimate of how much the renovations were going to cost.
It gave them a shock: They both estimated that it would cost between £50,000 and £70,000 to carry out the changes they had in mind. As they walked back up Thornbury Avenue Charlie admits that he and Sarah were beginning to have second thoughts about the older house: “The potential renovation costs were making me nervous and at the time Sarah had just finished three years of studying for her MBA. It really made me wonder if perhaps we needed a break.”
It was in this state of mind that the couple spotted Linden Homes’ Thornbury Park: They were heading back to the tube station – and with plenty of time before their next appointment – they decided, on a whim, to go in and have a look round:
“We went into the sales and marketing suite and had a chat with the sales executives. They took us around the show home and then let us look round one of the houses that was complete, but still just a shell. We saw a detached house and one called ‘The Robin’, a four bedroom town house. We hadn’t planned on buying a town house at all but we really liked it as it offered us plenty of space throughout. ”
The couple said they’d go away and have a good think: They knew Thornbury Park was in a great location for them, as they both work in Chiswick, just four miles away as well as being close to Osterley train station which takes just 35 minutes into London. They discussed the pros and cons and before 5pm that same evening they knew what they wanted to do:
“When we make a decision, we don’t hang around,” says Charlie; “Sarah rang Linden Homes at five minutes to five that same Friday and made them an offer for the Thornbury Park house. Linden Homes rang back half an hour later to say they would accept our offer. We went back the next day – Saturday – and signed all the documents.”
There then followed six weeks of whirlwind activity involving solicitors, banks and visits to Thornbury Park: “The sales executives in the sales and marketing suite were great, they were so helpful and kept in regular contact with us. They let us in to the house to measure up and gave us as much time there as we needed.”
Although it went smoothly from then on, it was rather nerve wracking for the couple: “We were chain-free buyers because we’d sold our house in Scotland and our rental property agreement was nearly up – if it had all gone wrong at this stage we’d have been homeless...”
But the paperwork all fell into place and six weeks after seeing their new Thornbury Park home, they moved in. “Jill, in the sales office, told us that she had never known a quicker purchase!
The couple are enjoying their experience at Thornbury Park so far: “The atmosphere here is very pleasant and we’ve met lots of our neighbours. It’s really well located and close to where we work.”
...They also won’t have to spend thousands of pounds and hundreds of hours on renovations and alterations: Friday 13th April was definitely lucky for them.
