Linden Homes is busy preparing for its spring launch of St John’s – its major new development on the site of the old St John’s Hospital in Chelmsford.
Derek Lawlor head of build for Linden Homes Eastern is overseeing the work:
“The initial surveys are now complete, allowing for demolition work to commence in the coming weeks. These are expected to take approximately two months. Work will also commence on our new sales and marketing suite, which will open in early summer along with the construction of our first phase of homes.”
The St John’s site is a well known part of this Essex city. (Chelmsford’s new city status, bestowed by the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee year, is now just over a year old).
The site consists of old and new buildings – some of which are listed and will be preserved by Linden Homes and given a new lease of life. The development will eventually consist of 1 & 2 bedroom apartments and 2, 3 & 4 bedroom houses.
Parts of the old hospital date back to the mid 19th century; and over the years the hospital has naturally formed very strong links with the town. Although St John’s closed its doors in 2010, when the last of its services were transferred to Broomfield Hospital, its legacy lives on in Chelmsford: It is estimated that around one half of the town’s population was born in St John’s maternity wing.
In this tight knit community, it’s well known that once you’ve lived here, you won’t want to move away – and with this in mind, many Chelmsford locals take advantage of the excellent links from the city into the capital - Liverpool Street station is just over half an hour away. So they can work in London by day, then retreat to Chelmsford.
