Work has now begun in earnest on the historic buildings of St John’s – Linden Homes’ new development on the site of Chelmsford’s old hospital, a hospital which served the community for more than 170 years.
Today all the old red brick hospital buildings have been retained: Their distinctive exteriors have been cleaned up and some of the brick work repointed. The buildings have all been re-roofed and the exterior character is preserved so these beautiful old Victorian buildings look as they always have.
Adam French is the site’s technical co-ordinator:
“We’ve essentially replaced like for like, so all the old sash windows are still sash windows – just new ones: The metal framed windows in the old administration block have been replaced with similar, modern versions. One of the windows is a beautiful, large circular glass feature, with wooden mullions. We have cleaned this up and replaced the glass. It’s in the hallway of one of the apartments and makes a really striking feature.”
In the old chapel building, Linden Homes has succeeded in maintaining the building’s old, vaulted ceiling. Several of the apartments feature the ceiling’s lovely old roof beams in their rooms.
The architects have cleverly and imaginatively worked around these old buildings creating, in one part of the old chapel, a duplex conversion – an apartment that is split level, so the bedrooms are on one floor, the living areas on another.
Currently there is a mix of new and converted homes available at St John’s.
