New Report Into Kitchens Says Space And Storage Create A Recipe For Happiness
16 Jun 2016

For many of us, the kitchen is the hub of the home – a place for the family to gather or friends to socialise.

However, the findings of a new study could suggest the trend is wavering, as a quarter of potential homebuyers (25 per cent) say they are put off a property by a small kitchen.

This, along with grease/fat stains, no natural light, lack of storage and awkward layout, were some of the reasons that prevent would-be buyers from putting in an offer on a property.

However, for many buyers of a brand new home – the kitchen remains the star attraction – says Linden Homes North, with its brand new appliances, carefully thought out layout, functionality and space.

Sales manager Julie Hubbard said: “In the majority of cases, visitors to our show homes walk in and are immediately excited to see the kitchen – which always delivers some kind of wow factor.

“We know how important a kitchen can be, from those in our stylish open plan smaller properties right up to those in our family-friendly five-bedroom homes. As well as being attractive, a kitchen needs to be practical, functional and meet the demands of the buyer – and that’s where clever storage ideas, which some older properties may not have, come in to play.

“We believe our kitchens tick all these boxes and more, and that our interior designers do a brilliant job in offering some inspiration to our buyers with all those added little touches.”

Meanwhile, the research, carried out by a online kitchen worktop specialist* revealed buyers’ kitchen turn offs to be:

  • Kitchen too small 25 per cent
  • Grease / fat stains / mould 20 per cent
  • No natural light 17 per cent
  • Lack of storage 13 per cent
  • Outdated cabinets and worktops 10 per cent
  • Awkward kitchen layout 8 per cent
  • Broken fixtures and fittings 7 per cent
