New Pathway Steers Motorists Back Onto Their Bicycles
25 Oct 2012

Drivers are being encouraged out of their cars with a £450,000 cycle path that has recently been constructed in St Albans.

The new route will provide the first stage of a cycle link from King Harry Lane into the city centre.  Linden Homes and Wates Developments have agreed to bring forward the payment of the Infrastructure Contribution associated with their stunning development of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes at King Harry Park, St Albans to fund the cost of the works.  The cycle route has been constructed for use by walkers, joggers and cyclists as an alternative to jumping behind the wheel for short trips to the shops and train stations. Construction of the route, which runs through Verulamium Park, is being managed by St Albans City and District Council

Linden Homes Chiltern Managing Director, Darren Maddox said: "Building new homes isn't just about what happens within the limits of the site. It's about linking new households into the rest of the community, which is exactly what this £450k cycle route will do.

"We at Linden Homes and David Brocklebank and his team at Wates Developments have had very positive feedback from our residents at King Harry Park. We already see the benefit it's going to bring to thousands of people for walking, running and cycling into the city. We hope it has not only given St Albans another attractive feature to show off, but also persuaded residents to leave their cars at home and take a more eco-friendly way to and from town."

Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles, Portfolio Holder for Environment, St Albans City and District Council., said: “The new cycle route will allow cyclists to avoid the roads and travel into the city centre through Verulamium Park. As a council, we are keen to develop a culture within the District which promotes sustainable forms of transport and this path helps to deliver that.”
